Emerald Hills

The owners of this large, mid-century modern home wanted to completely remodel the time worn and dated interior. The house, which sits on a hill, has a lovely feeling of sitting up in the branches of the coastal oaks that surround it, but the natural light and openness was compromised by dark floors and finishes, inadequate lighting, poor storage and a compartmentalized layout. In addition, several rooms including the kitchen, master bedroom and master bath featured unusually low ceilings which contributed to the overall sense of cramped, dark quarters.

In order to correct these deficiencies, we removed a non-bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room and vaulted the ceilings in those two rooms, replaced windows and doors in the dining room with large sliding glass doors and put bamboo flooring in the bedrooms, living, dining and kitchen. Recessed light fixtures were used liberally throughout the project to improve the interior lighting, particularly in the lower floor rooms where ceiling heights could not be raised more than a few inches.
