The clients had two requests: make an addition to their existing 800 square foot house that approximated an aircraft hanger, and kill the sun but not the light. Located in a post-war housing tract in the San Fernando Valley, a small house on a relatively large piece of land enabled a response that provided large volumes, even, north light (one of the clients is a painter), shade from the intense heat of the summer, and outdoor courtyard space directly linked to the living areas. Two private work areas are located adjacent to a linear library on the second floor.
