Endo Renovation

A play of levels, depths, and materials is introduced at the street-facing façade. The new front garage is wrapped with a white fascia that frames the front doorway and enlivens the stucco, glass, metal, and ipe exterior.

Brettler re-configured and opened up the ground floor spaces, creating a contemporary, open floorplan. Upon entry, one progresses past the ipe stairwell wall that doubles as concealed storage.

Warmly toned acacia floors ground the light-filled first floor while adding an organic quality to the crisp white surfaces.

The house incorporates abstractions of Japanese family crests, known as Mon, as well as other Asian elements. In the open dining room, black banding across floor-to-ceiling glazing forms an oversized grid, creating a shoji-screen effect.

Expansive windows, a glass-box kitchen dining alcove, glass doors, and clerestory windows provide a visual and literal connection between interior and exterior spaces.

Brettler incorporates many built-ins, including banquette seating for the kitchen table, bookshelves integrated into the kitchen island, and a double-sided glass cabinet acting as a room divider between dining room and kitchen.

The family room opens to the new patio, serving as an outdoor kitchen and dining area complete with built-in grill.

The home’s primarily white and wood tones—with pops of blue—are continued on the second level.

Natural, pale shades are seen in the master bath, where richly veined onyx tiles are placed in a subway pattern vertically lining the shower and sink areas.

A vibrant, multi-color climbing wall with built-in with loft becomes the child's room’s focal point.

The bath harkens back to Japanese cultural heritage in a modern way through the vanity’s simplified Mon graphic.

An upper roof deck provides a private outdoor escape. To mitigate energy consumption and increase natural air-flow, the architect integrated sustainable elements, such as a passive vent shaft through the stairwell to the roof, a large retractable glass roof, and solar panels.
