Feng Shui Temple

This home was designed to feel in spa like comfort and beauty, with a creative and playful living plan. It was built around a totally gutted smaller house you can see in one photo that follows. The finished home became a backdrop for fine art as well a being a sculpture itself, to live in. I've studied Feng Shui architecture since '91 to help inform me how composition is influenced by every shape, material, and detail. My goal being, to give each individual living there, the space to feel peaceful and creative. To this end, it has also proven to be very successful.
The exterior walls and roof finishes seen in the photos, are surfaces of a insulating, fire resistant envelope I developed called ExoThermo. It's R-30 to 50 energy efficiency, allowed added savings by using the smallest size and most efficient mechanical equipment. Additionally, we used sustainable materials like bamboo floors and recycled timbers to help qualify it as LEED Silver construction.

The Island is the center of gravity here. The trusses create lot of conversation as they are a much lighter feeling than wood and they are more playful.

Bamboo winders rise through a cylindrical space to a bridge above. Tiles below echo the shape of the round walls.

Bamboo and steel sculptural bridge glides through the atrium. It connects the stair to the bedrooms and roof deck. This is the Atrium , the heart of this home.
A harmonious and healing place to live is my intent.

I was able to re-use most of the massive concrete walls and some great timbers from this home built in 1984.

There is nothing like living in art, especially when it's not always whats is on the walls, but what the walls are themselves. It feels as good as it looks. The window on top gives the master a full view of the mountains through the atrium.
