Firmitas

A single family live-work space designed to fit into a 50 year old botanical garden. The house is modeled on rural complexes which utilize the courtyard as an extension of the interior space year round. This is the first of three phases which will eventually complete the courtyard. It has a compact footprint, exceeds insulating and other envelope requirements for a tight super energy efficient home. It is elegant and simple.

The courtyard "room" brings light and a sense of space during the winter. It allows us to expand our space during the milder months.

The salvaged cast Furness glass set into the exterior concrete wall creates a deep nook with a padauk shelf. The vase is Vinini & C. 1951 by Fulvio Bianconi and is called Pezzato.

This 1" thick cast glass is from the glass floor of the stacks in the Furness Library at Penn. The slabs of glass were being discarded during a renovation. The architect salvaged a piece to use in her future house.
