When I was first learning to screen print a friend of mine invited me to visit her families print studio on the upper east side of Manhattan. That print studio happened to be the studio of D.D. and Leslie Tillett. In 1946 Leslie and D.D. fled Mexico in front of a crooked judge and landed in Manhattan. What they built in their wake is one of the most unique and eloquent bodies of textile design to this day. Jackie Onassis, Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper and Harry Truman were customers to name a few.

When I walked through that door Leslie had passed on but D.D was still living upstairs while her son and his wife ran the print floor. In an unimaginable bout of generosity the Tilletts opened their space up for me to explore and work. It was an experience so immense that I did not even really grasp what was happening at the time though it’s probably changed my life forever.

This design is an amalgamation of different things that I saw in that studio. It’s also a humble homage to an amazing family and a beautiful body of work and history.
