Function & Style: Modern Kitchen design

This petite and poorly planned kitchen was in desperate need of attention. The homeowner, an avid cook, had lots of gadgets and not enough storage. Prep space was a challenge on its own and in addition to this, the kitchen was the only place for the laundry suite in the house. All that, plus the outdated cabinetry and colors, called for a serious intervention. We had to come up with a solution, without changing the existing kitchen footprint, while creating a comfortable and modern space.

Every square foot of this kitchen had to be planned very carefully. All the project limitations and challenges did not stop us from coming up with several options that accommodated the homeowner’s requirements. And after long and careful consideration, the final layout was confirmed by the client.

One of the biggest challenges was keeping the full-size washer and dryer out of site because these, typically, are much deeper than any kitchen cabinets. So, we relocated the washer and dryer suite to the kitchen entry, as the return wall on that side was deep enough to house these. Putting tall pantries and the full-depth refrigerator on the same wall helped camouflage the extra deep laundry suite.
The new range, and vent hood were also relocated. By doing this, we gained valuable prep space on either side of the stove. We added large and wide upper cabinets on each side of the hood, spice pullouts, pot and pan drawers around the stove to maximize functionality and storage. We also dramatically increased the size of the island and added seating for 2, built-in microwave, a mixer-lift and, of course, more storage.

The homeowners also wanted to have a dedicated space for a tea/coffee station but were concerned about the steam eventually damaging the cabinets. We came up with an idea of a “tea-box”, lined with contrasting slab on all 4 sides and back, to address our client’s concerns. Upper cabinet above this box was designed to accommodate bar supplies and tall pantries on either side provided additional storage with a hidden broom closet.

We used a combination of oak and white gloss flat panel door cabinets to achieve a soft contemporary look. Light and chocolate slab countertops added contrast and interest to the whole space, and strategic task, ambient, and decorative lighting helped create a much brighter modern kitchen.
Now our client can create her cooking masterpieces in style!
