High Tech Kitchen with Moveable Tile Wall
Just when you think you have seen everything from Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly, we have now engineered a moving tile backsplash wall that hides appliances and other items typically cluttering the countertops. This Locust Valley, Long Island kitchen renovation revealed an old fireplace that had hollow voids on either side. Ken Kelly decided to take advantage of this wasted space by extending the countertops into the depth of those pockets. He designed a panel lift system that raises the tile backsplash up and behind the back of the standard wall cabinets. The panels disappear into the empty pockets without taking up cabinet space. This moveable panel system raises and lowers the actual tile backsplash. When the panel is down, it looks like a normal tile backsplash with an uncluttered, clean counter. When lifted, it exposes the client’s small appliances similar to the way an appliance garage would hide the mess. At the touch of a button, the panel lifts and disappears into the wall cavity giving our client 2 four-foot long hidden storage areas on both the right and left side of their range. We also created a safety relay that automatically turns the electricity off to the outlets when the panels go down. That way, you cannot possibly leave an appliance on when the panel is closed. Video below shows panel unit in motion.
