This photo shows two shower niches installed. The owner found these through Home Depot's web site. They were fairly easy to install, however the cement board was a pain to cut around them. I sealed the joints with mildew resistant fiberglass tape and covered all joints and screw heads with thin set.

I always recommend putting two coats of a rubberized sealant over the cement board as an added layer of water penetration protection. It is costly including the labor but a worth while investment.

This photo is a good angle for the after shot which matches the before photo. You can see the difference it makes when you remove the bulkhead and have one flat ceiling. The offset tile pattern makes the long narrow space look a bit busier and not the focal point.
