My clients have two young boys, and wanted an organic vegetable garden so they could experience growing and harvesting vegetables fresh from their own garden. We opted for 2 long, deep planters on the deck. It was a challenge getting 6 yards of soil down to fill the beds, so we did the smaller bed the first week, and the larger bed the next week.

Both beds are filled, amended and planted. A grid trellis will provide support for the cucumbers, while the tomatoes will be trained to a single leader and spiraled up the green stakes.

Red romaine lettuce interplanted between cucumbers (on trellis in back) and eggplants. The lettuces are ready to harvest, 3 weeks after planting. Clients can harvest a few outer leaves from each plant, and stretch the harvest, or cut entire plants.

The summer garden is cleared out, except for a couple of cherry tomatoes that are still producing. Winter vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, spinach, Swiss chard, carrots, radishes, and scallions are planted in place of the summer vegetables.
