If your dishes are too large to fit in your upper cabinets, try storing them vertical. I had a carpenter create a "grooved tray" that fits into the bottom shelf of the cabinet. The plates fit in the grooves and create a nice visual (if the plates are pretty) without compromising on storage.

If you are in the planning stages of construction, it's a good idea to have the cabinet maker build drawers with built-in dividers. This works well if the drawers are intended for a specific use that is long-term. These drawers were also lined with a felt "silver cloth like" material.
