We took this residence down to the studs throughout the home. We completely remodeled both inside and out. We reframed the kitchen to make larger spaces. Pocket doors were incorporated to allow easier access and maximize space for the husband who is in a wheelchair.
He likes to assist in the kitchen so a lower countertop was installed allowing him to help. ADA accessible appliances were carefully researched and selected. The microwave door folds down, as opposed to swinging out, providing a platform to set dishes on before and after cooking. It was installed at a lower height to provide him access without assistance. A drawer style dishwasher, large doors that pull out versus a door that folds down, was installed for similar reasons.
The pre-existing step down living room was leveled out. The entire living area is now on one level, open and accessible allowing easy movement in a wheelchair.
Previously, the husband was not able to navigate the backyard due to uneven concrete steps. We cleared the area and repoured the entire backyard making smooth, sloped transitions into each entrance of the home. Not only is he able to move completely around the outside of the home freely, he will be able to safely exit the home in the event of an emergency.
Additional lighting was added for increased visibility and safety.
