This pristine 1100-acre lake is about 125 feet deep in front of Apalachia Dam with 31 miles of shoreline. It is a reservoir lake for Lake Hiwassee. This cabin is about 2 miles up the lake from Apalachia Dam and approximately 6 miles down the lake from Hiwassee Dam. Its normal rise and fall is about 3 to 4 feet a day because it is a reservoir lake for Lake Hiwassee. They produce electricity there and reverse the turbines at night to pump back into Hiwassee.

The lake is controlled by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and was built for flood control of the Chattanooga Valley area. The Forest Service controls the contour line around the lake and has designated the land within the 1320’ elevation contour line as a no-touch zone as far as improvements. Neither of them wants commercial activity on the lake so there are no marinas or boat rental places. This is the down side but the up side is the pristine wilderness quality of the lake. You can take any type of boat on the lake that you want – canoe, pontoon, motor but have to be totally self-sufficient. In fact the TVA provides a great boat launch below the Hiwassee Dam that is in great condition, good parking, lights at night and right beside the TVA maintenance area. I usually recommend visitors to try and bring a canoe with them. Fishing is good – lots of fish but hard to catch. It’s a fairly clear lake and cool so they are usually about 3 to 5 feet deeper than you’d think. You can get a fishing license at a number of local places. Be sure to bring your poles, swimsuits, rafts, etc. My family enjoys just throwing a couple inner tubes in the water at times and floating around on them. It’s a great vacation away from the hustle bustle of city life!
