Making Rooms for Art

Historic Renovation with modern addition. The goal was to make spaces for the display of the client's African Art Collection. The long-term plan is to make a sculpture garden out back - the glass wall on the stair is for a view to the future sculpture garden.

The addition appears conservative from the road, but the rear of the stairs all glass - to view the future sculpture garden. Notice the integration of the wheelchair ramp to serve the disabled owner.

The intention for the stair was to be sculptural in nature. the form of the stair addition is the shape of a stair.

The Stair at Night
There were several rooms that we linked in a fashion consistent with the making of space in sub-saharan Africa - Portals between spaces. We introduced floor lighting in the portals to make them distinct spaces.
Interior Portals Between Galleries
We developed a display system influenced by the integral scaffolding used on mod Mosques in the region. The display system is infinitely variable to position pictures, display boards and shelves.

A view of one of the portals - a space between spaces. The affect is that the rooms serving as gallery spaces are along a long path. The illusion of space deep.

We were resourceful in developing interesting details per the client's request. A drain chain from the roof empties into an opening in the concrete porch. We filled the opening with marble chips to match the white siding and anchored the chain with Pennsylvania Red Rock - Local connections.
