Meadow Beach House
Responding to its beachside meadow setting, a family retreat is crafted with lasting materials and designed to capture and celebrate the ever-changing views, light, and breezes. Vernacular components are distilled to their essence, and a Scandinavian sensibility blends together with the casual context of Martha’s Vineyard.
To blend in with its surroundings, the house is clad in the region’s typical cedar shingles and the massing is broken down into different volumes to appear more settled in the landscape. The two main volumes form a breezeway that guides airflow into the house. The entry sequence reveals a semi-inverted plan, placing the living room upstairs with an outdoor deck to capture the stunning views. Five porches and an irregular floor plan with plenty of nooks and alcoves allow inhabitants to find their sun or shade at any time of day. The natural woods, soft greys, and pale whites of the interiors respond to the ever-changing Vineyard light.
