The Grand Lady, “Lady India” from a designer’s perspective
At the time of her launch in 2003, Feadship Katrion (#665) was the most intricately built, finely detailed and highly specified yacht of this size ever created. Measuring 38.55 meters (126’5”), her features speak of a much larger vessel accommodating 8 guests and 7 crew.
Katrion was put on the market in 2013 and when sold last March, the new owner decided to rebuild the whole interior. Dutch interior design agency “Versteegh-Design”, an expert at turning pool houses into immersive wellness experiences, make an entry in this market and was asked to do the refit.
The restyling had to be carried out with great respect to the existing interior and craftsmanship, but the original oriental interior contained hard carpets, furniture made of bamboo, doors inlaid with bamboo wood and cabinets made of red cherry wood, a theme which didn’t echoes the owner's personal taste and requirements.
The new interior had to reflect the owner’s personal style; luxury, usage of rich materials, a hotel suite look, ”the metropolitan lifestyle" at its finest. A fine yacht designed for comfortable family cruising and suitable for children and dogs with wet feet. A platform of luxury, comfort and also partying on the boat deck.
Transforming a “grand lady” for the 21st century without losing her charms and class is quite a design challenge. Without radically change the look and feel of the yacht, by keeping existing elements and adding a few new elements. It was key to carefully protects Feadship’s uniquity.
The new design was a collaboration between the client (who always excite us with ideas), the interior design shop “Klaarenbeek Interieurs” (that found the most beautiful fabrics) and Versteegh-Design which eventually translated all ideas into a concrete design plan. According to Versteegh-Design “a combination of parties that strengthened the creative process and benefits the outcome”.
To equal the quality and details of the original cabinets, “Giorgetti” furniture was selected, for their expertise in craftsmanship and high-quality detail woodwork. All furniture was placed well-considered in the seamless and bespoke design and fits perfectly in combination with the wooden cabinets. The floor covering consists of very luxurious high pile carpets and the blue color makes a nice contemporary combination with the red cabinet wood. A nice design detail is the shading in the carpet, which looks like ocean waves. Waves which smoothly continue in all cabins; to have a Seaview, both inside and out.
The bamboo wood panels on all doors were replaced by smoked glass mirrors and wall panels were replaced by new shiny fabrics to give them a touch of glamour. The walls of the stairs are covered with a special 3d wallpaper in an Audrey Hepburn style. The hallway features a vista panel with a direct view to the master bedroom’s art. Wall panels and railings are decorated with cross diagonal elements, which are also reflected in the bed’s stitched leather headboards. The storage cabinet was converted into a luxury open drinks cabinet. The TV room on the aft deck was changed into a bar made of bent copper and leather. All DJ mixing console connectors are available in the bar, having the opportunity to party into the wee small hours of the night on all times.
Versteegh-Design was, in addition to the interior, also asked to create a graphic design for the new yacht's logo. In style with the yacht’s refurbishment, Katrion was renamed “Lady India”, which suits the best for this classic lady and she took her new name directly into her heart.
