This kitchen was formerly a galley that had a long peninsula coming out from the range wall. Things were quite compact, and there were large soffits. The footprint of the kitchen was changed dramatically by opening up the space and utilizing unused areas just outside of the original kitchen. Now there is plenty of counter, storage and a built-in table area that seats five people.
