Modern Class

At the Roosevelt Collection, a large retail and housing development in Chicago's South Loop, we utilized a classic curlicue hedge design as inspired by Versailles. We updated the timeless of elegance of the look with conical arborvitae and a carefully designed, yet free-wielding range of annuals and perennials in order to humanize the space and add flattering texture to the modern architecture surrounding the expanse of the courtyard. The effect was a useable, welcoming space which residents and shoppers linger in.

The color of the annuals and perennials swirling between the structure of the hedges was carefully selected to blend from warm to cool, as inspired by the gardens of Paris.
Swirls of Color
Never underestimate the power of packing in annuals. They have the ability to knock you out. Attention to height and texture when banking plants like this is required and is of the utmost importance.

The deep evergreen offers shape and structure. The flowers add the va-va-voom. The combined effect is a breathtaking elegance at the center of a smooth, modern building, enhancing its clean lines and strong presence.

Succulents can be used in small spaces and difficult locations to grow plants to make interesting patterns and add interest.

This mix of flowering cabbage, coreopsis, rudbeckia and pachysandra backdropped by the yew hedge was an undeniable delight. This garden was installed at the end of the summer due to the construction timetable. The fall presence this afforded the space was knockout.
The Beauty of Cabbage and Kale
I love the mix of warm and cool colors and varying texture in this gorgeous fall planting. A diamond shape was used as a constant throughout the space in order to provide a common theme and connecting look throughout the garden.
