Modern Classic

By combining new ideas with the client's pre-existing collections, we renovated this 40-year-old home to create a modern, eclectic space that fits this family's lifestyle.

The original home was not conducive to families, it was a very modern house for a lady who had downsized. We remodeled the kitchen, gutted and painted rooms, and added a whole wing onto the house for the family. The wing included children's bed/baths and a modern, cool kitchen. We reconfigured spaces and tied the house together for a great flow, which did not exist before.

When it came to interior design, the family had some great existing artwork that served as our inspiration. The fantastic Melissa Meyer painting was placed over the mantel. So we wanted to get some fun, punchy colors and frivolous patterns to compliment this piece, including a Clarence House bird fabric on two of the slipper chairs in the living room. Originally, the living room was dark-paneled, we painted it light, fresh colors.

We repurposed the family's traditional dining room furniture by having it lacquered white, and then we changed all the lighting to very modern, clean-lined lighting. The simple change in lighting changed the house tremendously and took a lot of the old-world feel out of it. In addition, we added a wonderful Ralph Lauren fuschia alligator print wallpaper in the dining room for color, texture, and interest.

The kitchen was a one-story, almost a galley kitchen. We blew the walls out and moved the ceiling up, creating the interesting beams in the kitchen. Once that was complete, we let it organically go the way the house grew. The house grew up as we did second-story additions above the garage so we decided to embrace the beams and rafter structure that was there then worked to make the kitchen a unique room.

The style of the house is very modern, originally designed by an architect. With this remodel, we enhanced the home to make it livable for a family.
