Mole Hill Missing Middle

The Mole Hill project examines building morphology as a means to address housing choice, and foster healthy urban communities. Bridging scales between a seven-storey apartment building and a two-and-a-half-storey Edwardian house, this dedicated rental building responds to a rich heritage context while challenging what is possible on a 33’ wide lot. Once a single-family bungalow on the site, the project now offers six units for tenancy, and demonstrates the possibility of achieving gentle densification while respecting existing neighbourhoods.

It embodies the desirable qualities of a missing middle typology, including walkable urban living, accessibility to a middle-income household, and housing diversity, which are all essential to the continued fostering of a city’s social and cultural vibrancy.
