Mountainside Studio
Located on a mountainside property with breathtaking views of the Channel Islands, this 800 sq.ft. cottage was never meant to be. While designing a new main residence, wildfires swept through without warning, completely destroying the 1 bdrm home. The cottage is the reincarnation of the home that stood in the very same location before the fires.
Composed of rustic, natural, and inherently fire resistive materials, the cottage was inspired by the rugged mountainside landscape and by the chalets of the French Alps where the clients spend part of the year. Board-formed concrete walls extend out into the site and landscape to form a terraced sideyard, and are used in the house to form the hearth and fireplace. Designed like a boat, the cottage maximizes space with thick storage walls and a simple floor plan.
