Nancy & Rodney's Kitchen

This craftsman house, built in 1939, has a brick exterior, double hung wood windows, and a gabled roof. The interior is superbly decorated with textiles and artwork created by owner Nancy Mims. The house has been preserved in its original state and required various maintenance upgrades and repairs.

The kitchen is located at the back of the house with access to the backyard. Although the original kitchen had a generous footprint, it lacked connection to the rest of the home and and had some tricky circulation issues. Working primarily with new cabinetry and architectural elements, the new design maximizes the existing footprint and provides adequate seating and storage. A new door system expands the view to the yard.

The galley kitchen layout works best for the existing space, but we increased functionality of the layout with a new desk niche and pantry, improved storage organization, and a new marble-topped window seat with storage below.

Historical craftsman trim and windows were preserved within the kitchen and dining area, but we opened up the space with new exterior doors and and arched opening toward the dining room. We offset classic materials with modern interventions, such as lighting, hardware and steel accents. The niche built into the pantry wall provides the opportunity for displaying artwork and a dedicated space for home office.
