Native Catskill Garden

We have been working on this all native (at least 95%) garden for several years now, beginning the landscaping before the house was even completed. The project was a very enjoyable and successful collaboration with the home owners who were avid gardeners themselves. We started by making the berm for the pond more attractive and over the years created a woodland garden, an evergreen grove and much more.

Exuberance

In the same woodland garden in spring you can see a carpet of tiarella, violas, golden seal, columbine, sedums with virginia creeper on the wall and goat's beard in the corner between the steps and the wall. This image was captured in late May.

View of the Pond

The view of the path has a nice juxtaposition of the Pennsylvania sedge, the red fountain grass in the pots and the soft native grasses in the distance on the other side of the pond. I can't take credit for the light but I love the way it looks in this photo.

The view across the pond includes the Canadian Select Cherries (also called Red Chokecherry, Shubert Select Cherry, etc.), Queen of the Prairie, red twig dogwoods and several varieties of physocarpus including the species green one.

The Fern Garden

In front of the boulder retaining wall in late summer there is an explosion of turtle heads (Chelone) and obedient plant (Physostegia virginiana). You can see the tops of the pearly everlasting (all collected from the property or nurtured volunteers) in the background.
