Needham Natives

This neo-Georgian house asked for a traditional landscape. Being within the 100' buffer zone of Charles River wetlands, the site demanded native plantings and permeable paving. We combined the two seemingly-conflicting demands into a native riff on a parterre landscape. Our client loves this unique approach.

Inkberry hedges enclose a small bluestone terrace that is punctuated by symmetrical red bud trees. Pennsylvania sedge beds interplanted with chelone, liatris, lobelia and daffodils provide mass, texture and interest through the spring and summer.

The permeability of the terrace and walkway is increased through the use of stand-up, natural slab paving with generous stone dust jointing.
