New England Picturesque

HOBI Award Winner for Best Kitchen Feature, 2010

A winding driveway leads to a picturesque shingle style house with loads of privacy and long views. Historical references to architectural masterpieces by Lutyens, McKim Mead and White, and classic Connecticut colonial architecture give this house a charming presence with echoes of yesterday and large open spaces of today’s lifestyle. Our own custom details resonate throughout the house. Crown mouldings, fireplace surrounds, cabinetry, and stonework were all carefully researched and designed by consulting architect Michele Rudolph. Details such as an alabaster resin skylight, antiqued mirror, marble mosaic, and many references to Connecticut’s rich architectural history abound in this house, which won a prestigious HOBI award for our company.

We drew inspiration from New England's rich architectural heritage for this entry. Sidelights that are large enough to allow plenty of light and echo historic doorways found throughout the region. The dutch door, sidelights, and transom window were designed by Riverside Design and Build.

A wrap porch gives shade in summer and protection in inclement weather. The porch wraps from the Main Entry around the house, ending in a round gazebo like space facing the rear lawn.

Riverside Design and Build designed the house for optimal enjoyment of the large property. A wrap porch has just one step down to the lawn making for wonderful parties. Large windows capture sunshine and views. We left plenty of room for a pool and tennis as part of the Master Plan.

A stone Rumford fireplace uses stone found on the property to bring some of the beautiful woodlands setting into the Great Room. Wood as a ceiling finish gives warmth and absorbs sound. Large energy efficient windows let in loads of light and give the room a feeling of openness to the outside.
