Many old homes we are asked to renovate evolve from an original small structure that had been added on to over the centuries. Often we are able to restore the historic sections of the home and renovate or add to it in a way that is both respectful and in keeping with the original structure.
In this case the oldest section of the home sustained extensive damage from termites and dampness over the centuries. Unfortunately there was not much to save, but that provided an opportunity to open up the floor plan to create bright spaces and a very comfortable family home on an historic site.

This three-car garage couldn't get much simpler, except for the fact that we included a walk up space above the garage that could become a studio some day and a covered wood storage area to serve the fireplace in the main house. Neither of these items was a great addition to the overall cost of the project, but is a great bonus to the functionality of the building. I recommend that any new garage have space above, which can accommodate current or future useable space.
