The first time that I visited the site I recall my first impression of the site and review of JR’s amazing architectural drawings being one of presenting this new white and black house in the natural grasses of the beach dune community of it’s backdrop of the Newport Beach Back Bay Bluffs. I remember thinking the hardscape and landscape forms needing to be simple, not over powering and just enough to form a quiet base to place JR’s beautifully understated architectural form. Because the architecture was simple, the landscape needed to be profoundly simple. The rear yard design is expressive but minimal to allow the eye to see it, pass over it and end up at the distant view of Fashion Island. At the same time the yard is the “fun” yard and includes entertaining features such as the pool, TV wall, fire feature and shuffleboard. Narrow module paver were used to reference the boardwalk at the beach. Grasses reference the dunes and the hardscape features echo the architectural vocabulary so it all looks like has always been there.
