This project virtually doubled the size of a 1,750 sq. ft. cottage without major alterations to the original house. There were no changes made to the front of the structure as a result preserved the streetscape in an historic neighborhood.

On the first floor the addition consists of a large library/family room paneled in knotty pine and a transition space from the existing dining room which functions as a bar and access to private outdoor entertainment space along the side of the property. A new back entrance hall, porch and laundry/bath accessible from outdoors to serve the existing pool were also included. The results were an open feeling to the main living spaces and an easy circulation flow that ties the existing and new spaces together.

On the second floor a new master bedroom, dressing area and bath were provided as well as a revamped guest room with a new private bath and generous storage space. The renovated house now contains four bedrooms and five and one-half baths.

A great deal of care was taken to preserve the character of the existing house while adding desirable space and features. The result was a seamless transition between the old and the new, resulting in a National Register District Highlight Award from Historic Charlotte.
