Novato Barn

Situated on four acres of family land, in Novato, CA, sits a newly constructed home made to look like an old barn. Collaborating with architect Ed Novak, this new structure brings together rustic and modern elements to make a warm home. Much of the architectural materials used, as well as many of the interior componets, were recycled items found on the property that the owner’s father had procured over the years. The wood used for the batons and door and window trim came from redwood siding once used on a school gymnasium. The kitchen and two bathroom cabinetry were built by the homeowner and his father-in-law using wood stock from one of the many woodpiles on the property. One of the bathroom sinks, various hardware, the sconces in the stairway, and the stair rail were all constructed from material salvaged from the property. A section of an old iron gate, pulled from a nearby property years ago when the city wanted to widen a main road, was used to create the headboard in the bedroom. However, elegance was not spared in the bathrooms. Carrara marble tiles and a black granite counter top comprise the upstairs bathroom, while porcelain tile and a slab of river rock granite were used in the downstairs bathroom.
