Oceanview Road House
Oceanview Road House is the result of an extensive internal and external makeover. Located on Oceanview Road in the heart of Mount Maunganui, this street screams family life. Wide roads, ample street frontage and spectacular harbour and water views mean that historically family baches were peppered along the hillside. Today though, Oceanview House stands out as unique for a number of reasons; unlike many of the original sections that have been subdived and the buildings obliterated, this property sits on a full elevated site of over 1000m2. The home was originally built over 50 years ago, but in that time has only undergone a few relatively small alterations. Despite purchasing the property as a family home a number of years ago, the owners wanted to really get a feel for the place before undertaking any alterations; so this is no whirlwind renovation, this is a labour of love.
Under the guidance of Kathrine McDonald Design, together with First Principles Architects, the project has resulted in a stunning transformation of both space and aesthetic – yet all this has been done with a nod to the original design; the idea was to enhance and improve, not wipe the slate clean. Ultimately the way we live has changed dramatically in 50 years, and accommodating these changes is what the team has embraced and worked with. Driven by a desire to draw from the resources around them, KMD Design has gone above and beyond in order to incorporate elements from local craftsmen. Furniture has been sourced from The Earnest Workshop, and these pieces of sleek modern mastery sit in juxtaposition to the aged textures of the 40 year old locally milled Tawa laid on the floors. The key to this project is that every component has heart, and the result, a home that will give the occupants joy for life.
