A contemporary extension and refurbishment to an existing dwelling in Devon.

The extension that transformed this house was the final phase of a refurbishment ‘master plan’ put together by Hilton Barnfield Architects and realised over a period of three years. This dwelling in Lympstone, Exeter, has been designed to provide the clients with a space that suits their lifestyle. The large bi-folding doors retract, seamlessly connecting the family space with the garden. This design blurs the threshold between the external and internal, achieving a harmonious flow. The use of power-floated concrete in both the patio and dining room imparts a sense of continuity, extending the living space effortlessly into the outdoors.

Exposed glulam beams draw the eye out towards the garden and frame beautiful views of the countryside beyond. A large roof light floods the new kitchen dining space with natural light while the carefully considered material palette of timber, plaster and concrete emphasises a welcoming, and warm atmosphere.
