Project One

Located in Darien, Connecticut, this beautiful Spanish style stucco home sits atop a hill with views of Gorham’s Pond just below. The house was renovated with a new addition and improvements made throughout the entire house. With a large family and frequent entertaining, DHDA was tasked with creating beautiful yet functional spaces to accommodate the family’s daily needs as well as that of their guests’.
A courtyard was created at the front of the house to give more presence and formality to the main entrance. Pink dogwoods and transplanted peonies line the new pierced brick wall that surrounds the motor court while large globe boxwoods punctuate the corners. Pink antique granite slabs which were original to the house, were reused for the front path. The path was broken up with the use of gravel and wooly thyme. Two backless benches placed midway up the path, are surrounded by boxwood hedges. Pink flowering shrubs and pink climbing roses bring out the soft hues of the house.
At the rear of the house, a large terrace was created adjacent to the covered. A renovated low brick wall preserved the detail and charm of the original walls while enhancing the character of the site. Lawn and brick panels soften this large space and create seating areas within. Unique features were added to the terrace and include a new water feature, the relocated antique wellhead and perennials in soft hues of pink, silver and white. Terra cotta pots and custom furniture were used to accent the space and make it more intimate.
New plantings were added throughout the property adding seasonal interest in hues of pink, silver and white, creating a lush setting and enhancing the architecture.
