Located in the heart of College Hill, this residence is surrounded by Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design and other notable historic homes. Formerly a contemporary styled home typical of 1970’s suburban developments, the original sizes, proportions and placement of windows significantly diminished the quality of natural light and views of the city. The home’s position on a corner lot also lacked privacy as pedestrian traffic regularly cut through the property. In solving these key issues, the architect was challenged with creating a design that captured the progressive and modern personality of the capital city.

A primary focus of the design was to visually and spatially transform the building and its landscape to increase the home’s privacy without losing its meaningful connections to this vibrant center of residential and student activity.

Complete interior and exterior renovations transformed the existing structure into a residence that kept with the character of the surrounding neighborhood while maintaining the overall modern spirit of the original building. Structural modifications to existing dormers and new windows brought light and views deep into the interiors of the house.
