Pyrite House
This home makes the most of its' small urban infill lot of approx. 60' x 80'. The 'Pyrite House' was inspired by a decorative chunk of the mineral found in our office. Pyrite often takes the shape of cubic crystalline entities growing out of a more random mineral matrix. Similarly, the design of this home involves several cubic glass rooms that appear to grow from a central architectural volume. The clients specifically requested an industrially-inspired aesthetic that also had a certain rustic warmth to it. Exposed copper water lines, weathered brass fixtures, and blackened steel elements extend the simple industrial look throughout. A steel panel keeps the living room TV hidden when not in use but can be raised via an industrially-inspired pulley system counter-weighted with decorative stones. A small, semi-randomly planted English country-style garden rounds out the informal aesthetic.
