Ferguson Malone Architecture

Rakhaus Residence

The project involved modern, environmentally and historically sensitive alterations to an existing mid-century residential structure inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and created by members of the Taliesin Fellowship for their own use in Bedford, New York. The scope of work included: preservation and improvements to the original circular stone building (circa 1952); removal of later inharmonious additions that were too small and in disrepair; and compatible new construction of a two-story modern addition suitable to the owner’s twenty-first century family life-style, while being respectful of the Usonian genre.
The success of the project is owed to strong collaboration among owner, builder and design team, all of whom were determined to honor the integrity of the original design with artisan quality workmanship. The project received a 2011 Honor Award form AIA Westerchester + Hudson Valley chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
