Recycled plastic nesting chairs
Recycled plastics traditionally pass through several processes - with associated transportation inputs - before they can be utilized in the production of new objects. Additive fabrication promises a shorter path with a smaller energy footprint, enabling locally collected plastic wastes to live again as stylish and desirable objects.
For this project, a chair was designed to accommodate the needs of not only the children that would use them, but also of the rooms that would need to store them. A nesting design not only enabled for a vastly reduced storage footprint, but also builds in a natural size variety, accommodating the range of body sizes one typically sees in a household with 2 toddlers.
When in use, the negative space within the chair serves as a convenient storage area for blankets, toys, and stuffed animals. Recycled PETG was chosen for it's clarity, ductility, toughness, and self-extinguishing flame spread performance.
