Red Hook Carriage House

After catastrophic flooding during Hurricane Sandy, this carriage house in Red Hook was reborn. The upper floors were untouched, but the main level - including the builder-grade kitchen, home office and a bathroom - required a gut renovation. After six months, the owner was able to return to her home and enjoy some luxurious new touches, including radiant concrete floors, a steam shower and a built-in coffee maker, as a reward for surviving the storm.
Midcentruy nightstands, with matching lamps, flank a platform bed from Design Within Reach. Vintage throw.

Reclaimed pine floors came from a 100-year-old Brooklyn townhouse that was undergoing renovation. Cubbies store office supplies as well as linens and place settings for the dining area on the terrace. All furniture vintage.

This bathroom, which is adjacent to the gym/guest room, features a steam shower, towel warmer and a playful mix of tiles.

A south facing roof deck is perfect for growing sun-loving vegetables like tomatoes and peppers. Simple wood decking tiles, from Ikea, protect the roof's surface and keep it cool underfoot. A cedar planter was added for privacy.

These reclaimed wood shelves were rescued old rafters from a house that was being renovated in Brooklyn. The bench is over 10' long, and came from an antique dealer in the Navy Yard area. A custom cushion was added for the seat. The wood - all kiln dried - fuels the wood stove upstairs in winter.

The owner of this home is a devoted cook and entertainer. Rather than squeeze a living room into the main level, she opted for a large dining room and spacious kitchen. Clever built in storage, all custom built, makes the most of the space under the stairs.
