River House
The Nueces River House is situated on a large ranch near Uvalde in southwest Texas. The site is predominated by its attachment to the Nueces River. The home’s layout and form is driven by both its visual relationship to the river and the specific climate of southwest Texas. Separated into its primary programmatic elements, the overall massing corresponds to living areas, sleeping areas, a garage and utility arm, and outdoor living spaces. The client demanded sweeping views of the river and surrounding countryside so deep overhangs and eaves shade the interior spaces. Screened in porches, verandas, and an outdoor pavillion provide transitional outdoor living space. The structure is composed of a prefabricated heavy timber and structural insulated panel system providing a tight exterior envelope. A stormwater harvesting system and photovoltaic array are just two of multiple strategies employed to minimize the ecologic footprint of the structure.
