A careful study of the relationship between the building envelope, river, and mountain views beyond led the architects to elevate the main floor of the Riverbend residence six feet above the natural ground plane. The result is architecture that engages with its riverine and mountain setting.

The Riverbend structures are connected by wood decking, which creates a shared outdoor space. From the outdoor living space, one looks through the living room of the main house to the Tetons beyond. This transparency renders the structure less imposing and further connects the home to its site.

The architects designed the Riverbend residence and guest house in a stripped-down plan: as two bars set perpendicular to each other. The material palette combines cedar and glazing wrapped in a steel plate shell.

On both sides of the Riverbend residence, echoed in the guest house, ten-foot overhangs run the length of the building. The resulting carved-out spaces, lined with cedar, provide warmth and a natural element, as well as contrast against the metal skin of the building.

This statement powder room is the only windowless room in the Riverbend residence. The room reads as a tunnel: arched full-length mirrors indefinitely reflect the brass railroad tracks set in the floor, creating a dramatic trompe l’oeil tunnel effect.

While texture and color reflecting the personality of the client are introduced in interior furnishings, the overall restraint of the architectural palette creates a built experience that has the feel of a quiet platform set amidst the trees.
