Riverside Residence
Over a ten-year period from 1994-2004, Gans & Company renovated and recombined apartments at 404 Riverside three times for a client as he married and started a family.
1. The client bought the library, dining room and living room of an apartment that had originally occupied an entire half floor of a 1904 building. The first project added a new bathroom and kitchen to the former library. The bathroom was housed in a steel and glass enclosure, which stood independent of the apartment structure. On the kitchen side, it supported glass shelving. On the foyer side, it framed a kind of proscenium and window.
2. Unable to acquire the adjacent apartment, the expanding family bought the remote servant quarters of the original apartment. This renovation created a suite of bedrooms and a bathroom. For several years, the family walked along the public hallways between these sleeping quarters and their original apartment.
3. The family eventually acquired the apartment adjacent to their first property and could create contiguous living, bathing and sleeping arrangements. The new arrangement has an expanded foyer with a powder room under the skylight. The former steel and glass shower has found new life as a freestanding outdoor, poolside shower at a friend's country home.
