I worked closely with the home owner, Habitat for Humanity, and Historic Charleston Foundation to preserve and renovate this c. 1919 Freedman's Cottage in downtown Charleston, SC. The two room historic structure had been greatly modified from it's beginnings with one large window added to the front facade, replacement of the piazza screen wall and porch with an aluminum screen porch and concrete slab, and two substandard additions that as a result caused the home to fall into disrepair. We took every effort to tell the story of the history of the cottage by either preserving or re-inserting the original architectural character and further enhancing that character with the new additions.
