Salitre Jewel Box Lisbon

Located in the heart of Lisbon, the Salitre Jewel Box is the result of a meticulous transformation of a long-abandoned three-story building into a vibrant and contemporary four-story mixed-use development. Designed by Studio AMA in collaboration with local firm MAS Arquitectos, the project brings together a commercial co-working space on the ground floor with two elegant residential flats above. The design emphasizes spatial efficiency and refined comfort, with every element carefully considered to enhance livability within a historic envelope.

Inside, custom built-ins and smart layout choices maximize space while maintaining a clean and cohesive aesthetic. Portuguese marble features prominently in the kitchens and bathrooms, while hand-painted tiles from Sintra add vibrant, artisanal character. The interiors are further enriched with wood parquet flooring, brass fixtures, and textured wallcoverings that balance modern sophistication with timeless warmth. Finishes and fixtures from renowned European brands were selected to complement the architecture and elevate the daily experience.

Sustainability played a key role throughout the renovation. Retaining the original structure helped reduce the embodied carbon footprint, while upgrades like double-glazed windows, mechanical exterior louvers, and a zoned heat pump system contribute to energy efficiency and climate comfort. The façade was restored using a reproduction of the original azulejo tile pattern, honoring Lisbon’s architectural heritage and enriching the surrounding urban landscape.

The Salitre Jewel Box reflects a thoughtful fusion of modern design, local craftsmanship, and environmental responsibility—breathing new life into a historic Lisbon structure while creating a space that feels both contemporary and rooted in place.

This project exemplifies how historic architecture can be respectfully revived into a modern, livable, and inspiring space.
