Shirley Birmingham Dream House

A Birmingham dream house is a beautiful steppingstone on the way to another residence. It's a house with a sunny nature. Perched as it is on a hill, over-looking a grandly sloping front law, it could have easily served as the movie setting for Cheaper by the Dozen or Please Don't Eat the Daisies.

The master suite includes a private library freshly paneled in crotch mahogany. Heavy draperies are 19th-century French tapestry panels. The formal fringed sofa is Stark's Old World line and is upholstered in Stark fabric. The desk, purchased at auction, is chinoiserie on buried walnut.

Calcutta gold marble adds subtle color to the simple palette in the luminous master bath. The classic basket patterned tile floor and Michael Smith faucet are from Ann Sacks, and the sink is from Waterworks. Offsetting the white custom cabinetry is black Oaxacan pottery.
