Smokecreek Chalet

The Smokecreek Chalet is unique in that it was a high-end custom contemporary home at its inception and has been distinctively restored to a contemporary style that is slightly industrial with a touch of current modern fascination and an underlying sense of classic elegance. The home is 5,550 square feet; consisting of 5 bedrooms, all with ensuite baths and two additional half baths. The renovation took place over the course of 8 months and costs totaled approximately $450,000.

This bathroom wasn't really a classic Jack and Jill bath that shared facilities. It was two full bathrooms that were connected with a pocket door. I turned it into a fairly classic Jack and Jill with a double sink vanity and a separate shared shower and toilet with a privacy door.

Looking back at the entry (on the left). Fireplace with slate stone surround. We added more windows on the right, added a mantle above the fireplace and painted the wooden architectural detail.

We rebuilt the catwalk in order to achieve a lower profile and to open it up. We removed the spiral stairs (as cool as they were) and installed a new 2 story staircase that went further to the lower level. We changed the configuration of the windows in the back wall and added more.

The main HVAC chase reaching all 3 stories ran through the back of that closet just to the left of the stairs. It created an impediment to an open entry into the house. (The front door is in the background.) We pushed the ducting further to the left and demolished the chase/closet.

It was an impressive kitchen for its time in 1980. It had a 6-eye Jenn-Air cooktop in the island, a double oven, and a 36" refrigerator. We pretty much stuck with this layout. We did move the double oven to the left next to the fridge. We of course took out the drop-down ceiling above the island.

This is the back staircase. The door on the right opens to the stairs going down to the basement. We opened it all up with an open staircase top to bottom and vertical abstract railing running through the center. You have to see it!
