St. Clement Shrine
The façade of the church was having extensive stone, masonry and stained glass repair, replacement and restoration, My role was to artistically restore and paint the sculpture and gold leaf the capital and cross. I also artistically photographed the restoration while it was under construction using a Nikon D810 and will publish these photographs under a new project title. The statuary on the façade was hardly noticeable and there was no sign of original paint or even coloration. It is possible that the paint had completely deteriorated due to harsh exposure over the past century. Regardless. it was decided to sensitively bring some color to the entryway façade and this was to be the focal point especially while the staging was already in place. While they were finishing up with final stone work and acid wash I would head down the street almost daily to The Museum of Fine Arts and Gardener Museum to photograph relevant period works of art and do extensive research for the statuary painting. All in all the results were quite a success and people for the first time commented that they never even noticed it before. Truth be told , we were all a bit nervous about the final result for you could not see the final results from the ground until the staging came down.
