Staircase Update

These stairs (look at before pics with carpet) were run down, carpet was worn, outdated, and felt unwelcoming to the downstairs of this home. Now the staircase feels fresh, and was done for under $500! And about $120 in supplies and materials, the rest was labor.

Here, they are filling all holes, and since these stairs are the typical MDF stair treads, and they had them painted, they simply watered down the stair ends, and filled the rough parts with the putty.

One thing I regret is not saving the padding they put on the risers. It was good padding, and could have used them for under the new runner. But, it was only $20 to get new carpet padding, and no old dust mites.....so! Ha

The rails are sanded, stairs are puttied and ready to be painted. Still trying to decide which flooring to use on the landing, or if they were going to put new paintable wood ply down to paint black.

Here, they painted the risers white and the stair tread ends so they could see if it needed more putty-answer:it did!

As you can see, once the stairs are down, it will need to be caulked. I always choose a silicone base caulk in the tube to conceal any openings. A white paintable caulk will always be top choice-or anything paintable for sure.

I decided to putty these holes myself-because at this point, they went with an LVT choice. Took 11 of the 12 pieces in the box! It’s approximately 3x8. Also, they didn’t remove the trim (my fault), but I had a great solution that turned out nicely. I got a tiny trim to go along the bottom of the...

Each spindle took about 8 minutes each, took about an hour for rails, another hour for the bottom wood, so budget your time accordingly.
