Steam-bent Oak Handrail

This steam-bent handrail was installed in a historic 1930s Craftsman-style home in Sausalito, Marin County, California. The staircase and ornamental iron picket assembly was in place. Custom forms were built in situ, and the oak rail sections were precisely steam-bent and laminated in place. The sections were hand-worked, and cut to fit and rail-bolted together. Custom transition blocks were hand carved to the profile, and rail-bolted to the sections above and below the second landing section adjacent to the front door.
