Steamboat Bridge

We were commissioned to rebuild a landmark bridge on lake Winnipesaukee, the bridge connects Birch Island with Steamboat Island. The original bridge seen here was built in 1933. It has been said that it was constructed of a very dense wood called Hornbeam, but when we dismantled it we discovered it was in fact made from red oak. We decided to replace the bridge with white oak as it is the most impervious hardwood to rot due to its closed cells. After a couple years of weathering the new bridge looks as if its been in place for decades, less the wear and tear. Although many improvements were made and some modern fastening was used, the size and shape of the bridge is exactly the same as the original. The original hardware was refurbished and reinstalled.
