Suzani Collection

"Suzani" originally means needle in Persian, but to most collectors, the word has a more specific meaning, "suzani" is synonymous with the glorious rich embroideries of Uzbekistan.
In recent years, with a strong patronage from collectors around the world, we at The Carpet Cellar have participated in a remarkable revival of this old art form. There has been a huge demand to bring the vitality of these traditional treasures into our modern day living.
Elegant floral motifs dominate in Uzbek suzanis--in a bleak desert landscape, the ideal of the oasis and courtyard gardens were especially cherished, and so plants, blossoms and vines of all types appear, as well as occasional fish and birds. As do old abstracted forms; palmettes, rosettes, medallions that represented the power of the sun, moon and the stars. These are bold designs, with old symbolism centered on a circular motif like an open pomegranate, the symbol of fertility from the Mediterranean to China.
The patterns are a positive image of continuity and survival and often employ powerful contrasts, as if to distinguish dark and light, good and evil, life and death, and strong colors such as red for blood, brown for the earth and blue-black for the sky.
We at The Carpet Cellar have taken our obsession with these rich, warm and vibrant textiles and have laboured with our finest weavers to create a glorious new range of luxury Suzani carpets."
