The Abbey Interior Remodel

Remodel of condominium in converted church. Neo-Gothic church built originally in early 20th century and converted to condos in 2000. Client bought and remodeled unit which contained original bell tower. Completed in 2012 in collaboration with Sarah Kulungowski, Interior Design. EXISTING: Early 20th-century Denver church was converted to condos in 2000. Clients purchased and remodeled the unit that includes half the former sanctuary (front) and bell tower (left).

The great room after renovation. Renovations included a new custom corner fireplace, remodeled kitchen, and the former half wall on the upper level was extended to the ceiling for greater privacy (with openings featuring antique cast iron balustrade panels).

Before
BEFORE: Half-wall separated the master bedroom (in the former choir loft) above from the 2-story great room. Kitchen is in early stages of remodel below.

DURING CONSTRUCTION: For greater privacy, master bedroom half-wall was made into a full-height wall with openings. Antique cast iron balustrade panels from India were purchased in local antique store by client and installed in openings. Kitchen in later stages of remodel.

BEFORE: The existing master bedroom was located in the former choir loft, and was separated from the 2-story great room below only by a half wall. The client sought greater privacy while retaining some of the natural light from the large gothic-arched windows in the great room.

AFTER: Half-wall was made into a full-height wall with openings. Antique cast iron balustrade panels from India were purchased in local antique store by client and installed in openings. Carpet replaced by wood floor that was salvaged from a gymnasium and refinished.

Before
BEFORE: Ceiling separated middle portion of bell tower from upper portion, which was attic space. Client wanted to open ceiling to access upper portion and create a mezzanine/ office area there.

AFTER: New metal stairway provides access to upper portion of bell tower (formerly attic). Gothic arch-shaped cutout in ceiling creates space for chandelier, which has light reflecting off it from new large skylight above.

BEFORE: The upper portion of the existing bell tower only served as attic space and concealed the top portion of neo-gothic windows. Client wanted to utilize this space as a mezzanine/ office.

BEFORE: Existing bathroom had separate room for shower and toilet. Client desired more openness in bathroom and new fixtures.

AFTER: Wall removed to increase openness in bathroom. New tub with rainforest marble surround intersects new shower stall. Tub and shower separated by a glass and tile partition with arched niches in both sides containing shelves.
